December '24 - Brainspotting and Internal Family Systems Protector Parts
In the past month, I completed the nearly 100-hour foundational course for Internal Family Systems, developed by Richard Schwartz. What I learned is that me, and many of my Brainspotting colleagues, have missed giving and receiving Brainspotting on our “Manager Protector Parts.” Manager Protector Parts develop as a way to help our most wounded and traumatized parts avoid re-experiencing the intense pain and suffering of the past. The more severe the trauma was, the more extreme the protector parts tend to behave. I learned a lot about my own Internal Family System and have a list of my own Manager Parts that I plan to work on with Brainspotting. I am going to work on my “Achieving” strategy which developed to help me “earn” my way out of deep feelings of shame and unworthiness. Brainspotting rapidly accelerates the healing available in IFS, because of its access to the deep, subcortical brain where trauma(s) and survival coping mechanisms are stored.
I realized, as a clinician who is a stickler about a thorough and measurable treatment plan, I have neglected to work on many of my own disruptive protector parts and many of my clients'. I have always attended to my client’s “firefighter protector parts,” which are the most disruptive, harmful, and impulsive protector parts. For firefighters, I have historically used Roby Abeles “Crocodile Addiction Frames” as well as Expansion Brainspotting. It was news to me how many of our everyday life strategies from our “Manager Parts” are problematic because there are traumatized parts of us lurking underneath! These protector parts are terrified of us ever re-experiencing the pain from our past traumas. The motto seems to be, “never again!”
Here are some of the most common protector parts that many of us would benefit from Brainspotting because they can become extreme in their roles and inadvertently cause suffering.
If you would like to see a Demonstration of Brainspotting with IFS “Manger Protector Parts”, the “Self” (Soul of the client) and the “Exile” (the traumatized part underneath) please come to my Trauma Mama Hour on Tuesday, December 3rd at 12:00pm Pacific Time, 3:00 pm EST and 8:00pm European ST
***Please note: To protect the privacy of our demo volunteers, TM hours ARE NOT recorded for distribution.***
